NBA Playoffs May 3rd, 2009 "Go long!" shouts John Averly, the 21 year old college senior who is a curious favorite in the 2010 NBA draft. We caught up with John playing in an after-practice scrimmage between Scranton State's basketball team and players from local high school basketball teams, but unfortunately he was too occupied and out of breath to give an interview. Averly, standing just shy of six feet, is not your typical first round pick given that he has spent most of his college sports career as starting quarterback for the champion Scranton State football team. This fact is made even more apparent by Averly's inability to shoot or pass the ball in a conventional manner, instead opting to throw the ball one-armed and overhead towards the goal or his teammates with surprising accuracy. When asked whether he thought Jon's mixture of of full- and half-court shots were 'game-changing' for NBA basketball, Mark Cuban responded: "Undoubtedly. He's already caused a sort of defensive reaction in the remaining draft lineup" referring to a recent recruiting interest for several college and NFL linemen. When asked to comment, star NBA player LeBron James said "As long as we don't have to wear helmets or pads I'm fine with it, but I hope this Averly guy can keep his mind in basketball and not try to kick any field goals or anything." |
